MALIK BURROUGHS

Meet

Einstein once said,

“that only a life lived

in the service of others

is worth living.”

Malik was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles in a house purchased by his grandmother, in an all white neighborhood. At the time she purchased the house, it was illegal for her to do so because of racially restrictive covenants. Soon after, his mother returned to his grandmother’s home to escape domestic violence, but by that time, all of the white residents had fled - poverty, drugs, and gang violence had take root in the community.

Malik's grandmother would feed those who were hungry and offer a place to those who were drug addicted or homeless.  Her examples of kindness instilled in Malik an empathy for his fellow man and a drive to serve those who are in need. His grandmother, known to the neighborhood as Mrs. Parker, embodied the words of Einstein and inspired him to carry her commitment to helping others into his work in the academic and legal profession.

The elementary school, middle school, and high school Malik attended were all at one time rated in the bottom ten schools in California. Yet, he was impressed with the idea that he could achieve beyond what many thought was achievable in his neighborhood. Through hard work, luck, providence, and the help of mentors, he was able to attend USC (undergrad) and UC Berkeley School of Law.

Malik has dedicated both his professional and personal life to the service of others. His professional work includes working with Marielito Cubans seeking, political asylum, representing indigent clients in criminal and immigration proceedings and representing numerous clients pro bono. His volunteerism includes working as an election monitor, working as a judge pro tem and participating in the Big Brothers/Big Sister program. Malik would consider it both an honor and privilege to continue this service as a Superior court judge.
